Publish and history

Connected agents can publish a branch to your live docs site, review the publication history, and restore an earlier publication. These three tools cover the publishing side of the MCP server. Use them when an agent should move reviewed work to the live site, or roll the site back to a previous version.

Tools on this page

ToolWhat it does for you
publish_branchPublishes a branch so it becomes the live version of the project's docs site.
list_publicationsLists the publications of a project, so you can see which versions were published and when.
restore_publicationRestores a prior publication as the live version.

Publishing and restoring require the publish scope. That scope implies docs:read, so the agent can also read pages, settings, branches, and history. The publish scope is listed in MCP Scopes and Approval Requests.

Writes to main are rejected:

Agents cannot write to the main docs version through MCP. Create a named branch, make changes there, and publish that branch. Publishing replaces the live version, so review the branch diff before you ask the agent to publish.

Publish a branch

Publishing switches the live docs site to the version on a branch. Before you ask an agent to publish, confirm the branch is ready. The agent can check its state and differences with the Branches tools.

1

Create a named branch

Ask the agent to create a branch for your changes, for example docs/update-quickstart. Agents edit only on branches.

2

Make and review the changes

The agent writes pages with write_page or edit_docs. Ask it to build a preview and review the branch diff so you can check the result before it goes live.

3

Publish the branch

Ask the agent to publish the branch. The agent calls publish_branch and the branch becomes the live version.

4

Confirm the live site

Open the published site at your project's address, <slug>.doxa.page, or your custom domain, and check that the new content appears.

Review publication history

Ask the agent to list publications when you want to see what was published before. list_publications returns the publication history for the project. Use it to choose the version you want to restore.

Example prompt to your agent:

text
List the publications for my docs project and tell me which one was live before the last change.

Restore an earlier publication

Use restore_publication to make a prior publication live again. This is the rollback path when a published change is wrong.

Example prompt to your agent:

text
Restore the publication from before the last change, then confirm the live site shows the earlier content.

After a restore, open the published site and check the pages you expected to change. You can also review the same history in the dashboard, as described in Branches, Previews, Publishing, and Restore.
